Joel Bootzin

Joel is Of-Counsel with the firm.

Joel Bootzin has had a broad-based intellectual property law practice for over 20 years. He managed U.S. and global patent portfolios for clients of all sizes including Fortune 100 companies, and he assisted with the development of their worldwide patenting strategies. In addition, Joel counseled clients on avoiding patent infringement, working closely with client product development teams to provide opinions and suggest design-arounds. He also analyzed intellectual property portfolios for due diligence of potential merger, acquisition, or licensing targets.

Joel has extensive experience working with a wide variety of computer, electronic, electro-mechanical, and mechanical technologies including software, hardware, network architecture, semi-conductor chips, and LEDs, as well as many other mechanical devices and chemical methods. In the software area, in addition to operating and network systems, Joel worked on systems for many different types of applications such as sensor systems, emergency response systems, communications, internet, gambling, real estate, and finance.

Joel is a graduate of the Chicago-Kent College of Law, and holds a Bachelor of Science in Architectural (Structural) Engineering from the Milwaukee School of Engineering. Prior to becoming an attorney, Joel was a structural engineer in the bridge department at Dames & Moore/Midwest Consulting Engineers. Currently, Joel is a member of the Illinois and Wisconsin State Bars and is registered with the USPTO.
